GAW

The Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) Programme of WMO focuses on building a single coordinated global understanding of atmospheric composition, its change, and helps to improve the understanding of interactions between the atmosphere, the oceans and the biosphere. It coordinates high-quality atmospheric composition observations across global to local scales to drive high-quality and impact science while co-producing a new generation of research enabled products and services. About 100 countries are participating in the GAW Programme. Some components of the GAW observational network are recognized as comprehensive and baseline networks of the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS). The GAW Programme operates according to the GAW Implementation Plan 2016-2023. https://community.wmo.int/activity-areas/gaw

EMEP

The Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution (LRTAP), signed in 1979, is one of the central means for protection of our environment. It establishes a broad framework for co-operative action on reducing the impact of air pollution and sets up a process for negotiating concrete measures to control emissions of air pollutants through legally binding protocols. In this process, the main objective of the EMEP programme (Co-operative Programme for Monitoring and Evaluation of the Long-range Transmission of Air Pollutants in Europe) is to regularly provide governments and subsidiary bodies under the LRTAP Convention with qualified scientific information to support the development and further evaluation of the international protocols on emission reductions negotiated within the Convention. https://www.emep.int/

MetClimVOC

The EMPIR Project MetClimVOC (“Metrology for climate relevant volatile organic compounds”) focusses on the improvement of high-quality reference gas standards for terpenes, oxygenated and halogenated VOCs. In addition to using well-defined standards, measurement methods also require advanced and up-to-date protocols which take care of sampling and analytical procedures (e.g. Water traps, O3 scrubbers, particle filters, sorbents, etc.), as well as their contribution to the expanded uncertainty. The general aim of the project is to yield traceable measurements of VOCs at an improved quality level and to provide realistic and complete uncertainty budgets. See https://www.metclimvoc.eu/

CiGas units IMT, Empa, KIT, and DWD are involved as external funded partners to provide expertise from the field of atmospheric measurements and to further paropagate results into the ACTRIS community.

Our Users

Our users are ACTRIS National Facilities (NFs), operational and exploratory platforms, which are operating instrumentation for continuous long-term measurements of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), condensable vapours and nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the atmosphere.
